Spaceflight Now | Breaking News | Martian meteorite surrenders new secrets of possible life

Martian meteorite possibly brought life to Earth?

Compelling new data that chemical and fossil evidence of ancient microbial life on Mars was carried to Earth in a Martian meteorite is being elevated to a higher plane by the same NASA team which made the initial discovery 13 years ago.

Now, 13 years after the Martian meteorite Allen Hills ALH 84001 life story emerged, the science team finally feels vindicated.....

Their data shows the meteorite is no smoking gun but a full of evidence that supports the existence of life on the surface of Mars, or in subsurface water pools, early in the planet's history.

California blaze grows to 140,000-plus acres.

A fierce fight was waged Tuesday to save a key communications complex and historic observatory atop Mount Wilson. The collection of towers is vital for government communications and nearly 50 radio and TV stations.

Fire retardant dropped from the air and firefighters clearing brush helped protect Mount Wilson, at least temporarily.

It is unclear what caused the Station fire, which charred an area that had not seen a major fire in more than 60 years.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency Friday as a result of the Station Fire. He also proclaimed a state of emergency on Tuesday in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles, where the Oak Glen Fire had scorched more than 1,000 acres. That fire was about 60 percent contained, fire officials said Tuesday.

The Pendleton Fire, also in San Bernardino, had burned nearly 900 acres by late Tuesday and was threatening 400 residences, according to fire officials. The blaze was 60 percent contained.

Schwarzenegger had declared states of emergency in Placer, Monterey and Mariposa counties because of fires.

We need a contemporary insurrection to reclaim our democracy, our freedom and our country.

We must challenge corporations and take back what is rightfully ours.

The second American Revolution. Let’s declare our independence from corporate rule!

Decades of deregulation and laissez-faire capitalist ideology have allowed corporations to steer the world's political, economic, environmental and cultural agendas.

A corporation is not a person.

It’s an organizational structure that has no morality and feels no remorse.

Yet the modern corporation enjoys the same rights as you or I: free speech, the ability to own property, the right to lobby government officials and protection against self-incrimination

Mercury can indeed pose a serious health threat to people who eat too much fish and seafood. But before you swear off sushi, consider the caveats.

"Fish, on balance, is recommended by doctors because it is high in protein and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids."

Mercury levels in fish are typically minute, and they vary among different types of fish. And unless you're eating catch from polluted waters, you usually have to eat an awful lot of fish for quite a while before showing signs of mercury poisoning. ....

"For the vast majority of people, it's not a real issue, because the vast majority of people don't eat fish more than once a week" - "It's for those people that we call the high-end consumers that we're most concerned with. .....

Eating fish twice a day for 20 years.
Medical experts say adults who eat that much seafood can indeed risk mercury poisoning. ....

Mercury occurs naturally in the atmosphere and humans pump even more of it into the air through pollution.

When it lands on lakes, rivers and oceans, mercury can be transformed by microorganisms into a more toxic form called methylmercury. That's the danger for seafood eaters.

Trace amounts of methylmercury can build up in fish and shellfish. And it can build up in the animals that eat those fish, including humans, who then can experience neurological problems.

Symptoms can include tingling sensations around fingertips, toes and lips, a lack of coordination, vision problems and trouble articulating words. In extreme cases, mercury poisoning can cripple, kill and cause birth defects.

Health officials are most concerned about the danger to developing brains and nervous systems and issue strict consumption recommendations for children, pregnant women and women of childbearing age. But all adults are advised to watch their seafood consumption.

The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies recommended several years ago that healthy adult men who consume more than two servings of seafood a week eat different varieties of fish to lessen risks of loading up on a single contaminant.
The rule of thumb is the lower on the food chain, the lower the mercury level. Salmon and flounder will tend to have lower levels than larger predators, such as shark and swordfish.

Eating sushi can be a concern because bluefin and other sushi-grade tuna tend to be bigger fish. But again, it's a matter of how much you eat. A piece of sushi could have less than half an ounce of tuna, according to Gochfeld. Eat a few pieces a week, there is likely no issue. Eat 20 pieces of sushi per meal multiple times a week, there could be a problems.
While people will sometimes point to the sushi-loving Japanese as proof of the food's safety, Gochfeld says that people in Japan consume a wide variety of seafood, including fish lower on the food chain, such as herring and sprat.

Former New York Mayor Ed Koch says he learned the risks of eating high-on-the-seafood chain several years ago when he started eating swordfish belly three or four times a week.
Koch showed no symptoms but had his blood tested as a precaution after being told of the potential dangers of mercury. The results: blood levels more than seven times normal.
The lesson here is moderation. People tend to get mercury poisoning through chronic exposure to small doses over long periods

It can take many months, but mercury levels in the body decrease over time. Koch, for instance, says it took about a year to get his levels down (he still eats swordfish, but only about once a month)

Militants cut US, NATO supply line to Afghanistan
Militants blew up a bridge in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday, cutting the major supply line for U.S.-led troops in Afghanistan with an explosion that turned the narrow span into a jagged metal "V."

It was the latest, and perhaps most serious, attempt to block supplies to the U.S.-led mission against the Taliban

Up to 75 percent of the fuel and supplies destined for U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan travel through Pakistan after being unloaded at the port of Karachi, and most are driven along the Khyber Pass.
